Fuel marker screening and laboratory analysis serve different purposes. A field marker test can provide a rapid indication relating to the marker addressed by the specific device and procedure. A laboratory can perform broader or more precise analytical work, depending on the methods requested.

The correct choice depends on the suspected issue, quality of the sample, consequence of the result and evidence required.

What is fuel marker screening?

Marker tests are designed around a specific detection purpose. The test must be used exactly as instructed, with attention to product type, sample preparation, storage conditions, expiry information, timing and result interpretation.

A field marker test may be useful for:

  • Rapid screening
  • Routine control checks
  • Identifying a result that requires further investigation
  • Supporting a documented delivery or incident record
  • Deciding whether a retained sample should be sent for laboratory analysis

The result should be described using the language and interpretation rules supplied with the test. Avoid simplifying a device result into a broader conclusion that the method does not support.

What marker screening does not automatically prove

A field marker result does not necessarily:

  • Provide a full chemical composition
  • Identify every contaminant
  • Measure all fuel specifications
  • Establish when or where contamination occurred
  • Prove which party is responsible
  • Replace laboratory evidence in a high-value dispute

The device addresses a defined marker response. It should not be used as if it were a complete fuel-quality certificate.

When a field test is appropriate

A field screening method may be appropriate where:

  • The correct test is available for the product and question
  • The user has the complete instructions
  • The sample is representative and traceable
  • The device is within its expiry and storage requirements
  • The result is used as an initial screening decision
  • The consequence of a possible false conclusion is limited or controlled

Record the test kit, lot or batch information where available, sample reference, date, time, operator and result.

When laboratory analysis is more appropriate

Laboratory testing should be considered where:

  • Vehicles, machinery or storage systems may have been damaged
  • The disputed product value is material
  • A supplier, transporter or insurer challenges the field result
  • Legal action may follow
  • Multiple contaminants or specification failures are suspected
  • The field result is ambiguous
  • The exact composition or degree of deviation must be established
  • A formal certificate or expert interpretation is required

The laboratory must be told what question it is expected to investigate. “Test the fuel” is too broad. The requested analytical methods should be selected with suitable technical guidance.

Use field testing and laboratory analysis as a sequence

The methods are not always alternatives. A controlled investigation may use:

  1. Representative sampling
  2. Document and delivery review
  3. Initial visual or field screening
  4. Preservation of duplicate samples
  5. Specialist selection of laboratory methods
  6. Interpretation of results against product and incident information

A field result can help prioritise action, while laboratory work can provide deeper analysis.

Protect the sample evidence

Before testing:

  • Assign a unique sample number
  • Record the sampling point and method
  • Photograph the context
  • Retain delivery and batch documents
  • Seal duplicate samples
  • Maintain chain of custody
  • Store the sample safely

Do not consume the only available sample in a field test if later independent analysis may be required.

Interpret abnormal results carefully

An abnormal field result should trigger a controlled response rather than an immediate accusation.

Consider:

  • Was the correct product tested?
  • Was the sample representative?
  • Was the device stored correctly and used before expiry?
  • Were the instructions followed completely?
  • Was the result read within the specified time?
  • Could another factor affect the test?
  • Is a repeat or independent test appropriate?

Create an escalation decision

A practical escalation record can state:

  1. The suspected issue
  2. The field method used
  3. The result and limitations
  4. The financial, operational or safety consequence
  5. Whether product use has been stopped
  6. Which samples and records have been preserved
  7. Which specialist or laboratory action is required
