Diesel density testing is a useful field-screening method when it is performed with the correct hydrometer, a representative sample and an appropriate procedure. It can provide an observed density reading for the sample at the test conditions.
Density testing does not, however, identify every possible contaminant or establish full fuel compliance. The result must be interpreted together with temperature, product history, sampling quality and the decision that will follow.
What density means
Density describes mass in relation to volume. Petroleum-product density changes with temperature, which means an observed field reading should not be interpreted without considering the applicable temperature context and test method.
A hydrometer floats higher or lower in the sample according to the liquid’s density. The reading is taken where the liquid surface intersects the hydrometer scale, following the instrument and procedure instructions.
What a field density test can do
A properly performed field test can:
- Provide an observed density reading within the hydrometer range
- Support comparison with an expected product range or prior sample
- Identify a result that appears abnormal and requires investigation
- Create a documented screening record at delivery, storage or dispute stage
- Help determine whether further testing is justified
The value of the test is strongest when the sample, instrument, temperature, location and result are documented.
What density alone cannot prove
A density reading alone generally cannot:
- Identify every contaminant
- Determine the exact composition of a mixed product
- Confirm all applicable fuel specifications
- Prove the source of contamination
- Replace laboratory analysis in a material dispute
- Establish legal liability without supporting evidence
Different products or contaminants can produce overlapping effects, and a normal-looking density does not rule out every quality problem.
Representative sampling is essential
A technically correct hydrometer reading of a poor sample may not represent the delivery, tank or batch.
Before testing, consider:
- Where the sample was taken
- Whether the product was settled or mixed
- Whether water or sediment may be concentrated at another level
- Whether the sampling container was clean and suitable
- Whether the sample could have been contaminated during collection
- Whether a duplicate sample should be preserved
Sampling procedures may need to vary according to whether the fuel is in a road tanker, storage tank, drum, container or vehicle.
Use the correct hydrometer range
A hydrometer must be appropriate for the product and expected density range. A diesel density kit and an illuminating-paraffin density kit should not be treated as interchangeable merely because both use hydrometers.
Check:
- Instrument range
- Scale resolution
- Condition and calibration status where applicable
- Measuring-cylinder size
- Temperature-reading requirements
- Manufacturer or supplier instructions
Control the test conditions
For a reliable field record:
- Use a clean, suitable measuring cylinder.
- Fill it with enough representative sample for the hydrometer to float freely.
- Remove obvious bubbles where the method requires.
- Lower the hydrometer carefully without allowing it to touch the sides.
- Allow the instrument to settle.
- Read the scale at the specified liquid surface position.
- Record the sample temperature and observed density.
- Clean and store the equipment safely.

A useful test record should include:
- Date and time
- Location
- Fuel type
- Supplier and transporter
- Delivery-note or batch reference
- Sampling point
- Instrument used
- Sample temperature
- Observed density

Where a dispute may arise, preserve a sealed duplicate sample using an appropriate chain-of-custody process.
When to escalate
Escalate for specialist or laboratory assessment where:
- The reading is materially abnormal
- The result conflicts with product documentation
- Vehicles or equipment have been affected
- Contamination is suspected
- The financial consequence is significant
- Legal or insurance action may follow
- The field result is disputed
